Bhubaneswar, May 4: India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium has reinforced its commitment to safety with the deployment of AI-powered drone surveillance at its Jamkani coal mines in Odisha, marking a milestone in smart mining innovation.

On National Coal Miners’ Day, Vedanta Aluminium CEO Rajiv Kumar highlighted the company’s dedication to workforce well-being and safe mining practices.

“Safety and well-being of our workforce is a non-negotiable priority. On Coal Miners’ Day, we are proud to lead AI and technology innovations that are redefining safety standards in mining and reflecting our commitment to building smart, secure and sustainable operations,” he said.

The CEO further stated that Vedanta Aluminium’s proactive adoption of AI and drone technologies underscores its commitment to creating a Zero-Harm culture and nurturing a safe, future-ready workforce. These initiatives align with the Mines Act, 1952 which mandates robust safety, health and emergency response measures.

The company’s latest initiative involves an AI-driven surveillance system capable of real-time aerial monitoring of a 500-meter blasting zone. The system detects and records the presence of humans, animals, and vehicles, facilitating instant alerts and live-streaming to prevent unauthorized access or anomalies. This proactive approach aligns with the Mines Act, 1952, which mandates stringent safety measures in mining.

Jamkani coal mine, Vedanta’s first greenfield coal project in Odisha, plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to its Jharsuguda plant. With these technological advancements, Vedanta Aluminium is setting new benchmarks in mining safety, operational efficiency, and workforce protection.
