Berhampur, Feb 1: Odisha Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena on Sunday met the families of the five persons who were killed yesterday in a tragic road accident at Haladiapadar flyover on the outskirts of Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district. District Collector V Keerthi Vasan accompanied the minister during the visit.
Calling the incident unfortunate, the minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to ensure strict action against those responsible for the accident.
The deceased were identified as Sibaram Jena (35), Jagan Nahak (20), Rakesh Nahak (21), Suryanarayan Panda (47) and Satyanarayan Beja (40).
“It is unfortunate, but it is a heinous crime. The truck driver killed five innocent commuters merely to overtake an auto-rickshaw. Both Jagan and Rakesh belong to poor families. I have assured their families that the government stands with them in this difficult time. We will take all possible welfare measures for them, and the driver will be charged with murder,” the minister said.
Earlier, the government had announced Rs 30,000 from the Red Cross fund and Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the next of kin of every deceased victim.
At least five persons were crushed to death on Saturday after a speeding truck, allegedly moving on the wrong side, rammed into three motorcycles on the Haladiapadar flyover along National Highway-16. Eight others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.
Eyewitnesses said the truck hit the motorcycles with such force that the victims and two-wheelers were thrown across the road. Traffic on both sides of the highway came to a standstill for a prolonged period following the mishap.
The truck driver fled the scene but was later nabbed and detained by police. According to police, the vehicle belonged to a local resident. “The driver was not under the influence of alcohol. All documents are intact, and blood samples have been collected for forensic examination,” police said, adding that the exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
