50-year master plan prepared to address long-term flood and drainage issues across the state. Heavy rainfall expected, but no major flood threat; urban areas urged to stay alert.
Bhubaneswar, Jul 14: Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has blamed the BJD government’s mismanagement for the persistent issue of waterlogging across Odisha, especially during the monsoon season.
Speaking after a high-level preparedness meeting, he emphasized that the current administration is taking long-term steps to resolve the problem. “The failure of previous governments to ensure proper drainage has led to widespread waterlogging. The state government is now planning a comprehensive river cleanup campaign to restore natural water flow,” said the Disaster Management Minister.
Pujari revealed that the government is preparing a 50-year master plan to address drainage and flood risks in both rural and urban areas. The plan includes clearing obstructions in river channels and improving water discharge systems to prevent flooding.
The minister also stated that while heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days, there is no immediate threat of a major flood. “All rivers are currently flowing below warning levels. However, due to intense rainfall, some areas may experience temporary water accumulation,” he cautioned.

Urban areas, in particular, are advised to remain alert during the monsoon period. The government has prepared a 48-hour emergency response plan to tackle any sudden rise in water levels and ensure swift action.
The river cleanup initiative is expected to begin soon, with priority given to regions most affected by waterlogging. The government aims to create a sustainable drainage system that can withstand future climate challenges and urban expansion.
