In a landmark decision, Odisha will issue matriculation certificates in Odia for the first time, alongside English, underscoring the state’s commitment to promoting its mother tongue. The announcement coincides with the release of matric exam results scheduled for May 2.
Bhubaneswar, May 1: In a historic move, the Odisha government has announced that matriculation certificates will be issued in Odia language for the first time. The decision, revealed by School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, reflects the state’s emphasis on promoting the mother tongue while ensuring accessibility at national and international levels.
Minister Gond stated that certificates will be available in both Odia and English, balancing cultural pride with practical utility. Authorities noted that if certificates were issued solely in Odia, students might face challenges in higher education and employment outside the state. Hence, the bilingual format was chosen to safeguard students’ future prospects while strengthening Odia’s presence.
The Board of Secondary Education (BSE) has already begun implementing the decision, with discussions held at the examination management committee meeting. This year’s matriculation candidates will be the first to receive certificates in Odia and English. Intellectuals and cultural advocates have welcomed the move, saying it will enhance the promotion and recognition of Odia language.
Meanwhile, the state government has confirmed that matriculation results will be declared tomorrow, May 2, at 4 p.m. Results of the State Open School Examination and Madhyama Examination will also be released the same day. Students can access their results online after 6 p.m. through the official BSE websites - bseodisha.ac.in and bseodisha.nic.in.
Additionally, results will be available via SMS. Candidates can type OR10 (Roll No) and send it to 5676750 to receive their scores directly on their mobile phones. This year, over 5.61 lakh students appeared for the matriculation examination across 3,082 centres in Odisha.
The School and Mass Education Minister further indicated that +2 results are likely to be announced in the third week of May. He added that results from different streams may be declared on the same day, streamlining the process for students.
