Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: Odisha is set to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the iconic national song “Vande Mataram” with a series of cultural and patriotic events across the state from November 7 to 26.

The announcement was made by BJP State Vice President Bishnu Das during a press conference held at the party’s state headquarters here.

A Song of Freedom and Sacrifice

Originally composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875, “Vande Mataram” became a rallying cry during India’s freedom struggle. From Swadeshi movements to anti-colonial protests, the song inspired countless revolutionaries to sacrifice their careers, education, and even lives for the nation.

BJP leader Bishnu Das emphasized its emotional and historical significance, calling it a “song of inspiration and courage for all freedom fighters.”

The campaign will kick off with inaugural events in five major cities — Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Balasore, Keonjhar, and Rourkela — on November 7. Following this, from November 8 to 26, each legislative constituency in Odisha will host a dedicated program to honour the legacy of the song, the BJP leader said.

Citizens, students, intellectuals, religious institutions, and youth organizations have been encouraged to participate by singing “Vande Mataram” and reaffirming their commitment to patriotism and national unity, he added.

Political Context and National Push

Das also criticized the Congress party for historically opposing the song, citing its 1923 decision to avoid singing “Vande Mataram” due to communal appeasement. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s October 1 Cabinet decision to celebrate the song’s 150th anniversary nationwide, calling it a step toward reviving patriotic sentiment among India’s youth.

The BJP has pledged full support for the initiative, with plans to organize grand celebrations across the country.
