Bhubaneswar, Aug 29: The Odisha government will announce nine new Notified Area Councils (NACs) on August 31, coinciding with Local Self-Governance Day, informed Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Friday.

This decision follows the declaration of 12 NACs earlier on August 17, part of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s Independence Day pledge to create 21 new NACs across the state. The remaining nine NACs are now set to be unveiled, with the government actively reviewing proposals based on population density, urbanization potential, and administrative feasibility.

Minister Mahapatra emphasized that the Urban Development Department has completed the necessary groundwork, including demographic assessments and infrastructure planning. A draft notification will be sent to the Chief Minister’s Office for final approval. “We are committed to equitable urban representation and bringing civic amenities closer to underserved regions,” he stated.

The move has sparked both anticipation and agitation. Towns like Borigumma and Begunia recently observed shutdowns protesting their exclusion from the initial NAC list. Citizens’ forums and local organizations have intensified their campaigns, urging the government to recognize their towns under the NAC framework.

The expansion of NACs is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, improve delivery of public services, and boost infrastructure development in emerging urban centers. It also reflects the state’s broader vision to increase urban coverage from the current 17% to 30%, aligning with Odisha’s rapid urbanization goals.

As Odisha prepares for the August 31 announcement, all eyes are on the final list of towns that will gain NAC status—ushering in a new chapter of grassroots governance and inclusive development.
