Bhubaneswar, Jan 9: In a major boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure, the Odisha government has decided to increase 502 postgraduate (PG) seats across its government medical colleges over the next two years, officials said on Friday.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET), Odisha Prof Dr SK Misra has formally communicated the expansion plan to 12 medical colleges, directing them to begin groundwork for the proposed increase. The directive calls for immediate preparation of infrastructure, including laboratories, hostel facilities, and clinical training opportunities, to accommodate the additional intake.
Officials said Phulbani Medical College is expected to see the highest addition with 76 seats, followed by Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput with 75, and Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital in Jajpur with 70. The expansion is part of a broader strategy to strengthen specialist training and ensure a steady supply of qualified doctors across Odisha’s healthcare system.

The move is expected to significantly improve the availability of specialist doctors in underserved regions, thereby reducing patient load in tertiary hospitals and improving access to advanced medical care. Officials noted that the increase in PG seats aligns with Odisha’s vision of expanding healthcare capacity and addressing the shortage of specialists in rural and tribal districts.
By expanding PG opportunities, the state aims to retain talent, reduce migration of medical graduates, and build a robust healthcare workforce for the future. The initiative also reflects Odisha’s commitment to aligning medical education with national standards, ensuring that its institutions remain competitive and capable of producing highly skilled professionals.
