The Koraput administration has imposed BNSS Section 163 in 21 villages of Kotia for five days amid concerns over Andhra Pradesh's activities in the border region. Gatherings, rallies and public meetings have been restricted, while seven platoons of police have been deployed.

Koraput, Nov 3: The Koraput district administration in Odisha on Tuesday imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Kotia group of villages to maintain law and order and prevent any administrative interference from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, officials said.

The decision was taken following an all-party meeting, with authorities enforcing the restrictions across 21 villages under Kotia panchayat in Pottangi tehsil. The move comes amid concerns over attempts by Andhra Pradesh to conduct panchayat-related activities in the disputed border region.

Restrictions in Place

Under the order, gatherings of more than five people at public places have been prohibited. Authorities have also banned rallies, processions, protests, public meetings, distribution activities and wall paintings on government and public properties within the restricted area.

The Koraput Sub-Collector has been entrusted with overseeing the implementation of the order. The restrictions will remain in force from November 3 to November 7.

Koraput police, assisted by the district administration, have deployed seven platoons of police personnel and erected barricades at strategic locations across the Kotia cluster to ensure compliance with the order.

Movement Unaffected

Officials clarified that the restrictions will not affect the day-to-day life of local residents. People will be allowed to travel to workplaces, agricultural fields and educational institutions as usual. Business establishments can continue operations, while the supply of essential commodities and access to healthcare services will remain unaffected.

Government vehicles will not face any movement restrictions. However, vehicles carrying public distribution materials and other supplies for distribution purposes from outside the area will not be permitted entry during the enforcement period.

Ration Truck Turned Back

In a significant development, an Andhra Pradesh ration-laden truck attempting to enter the border area on Monday evening was stopped by Odisha authorities near the Nerediwalsa checkpoint.

The vehicle, reportedly carrying government rice intended for distribution, was intercepted by Kotia police and the Pottangi block administration. The incident led to a brief exchange between officials of both States before the truck eventually returned.

Local residents backed the administration's stand, while Odisha authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the State's jurisdiction over the Kotia villages.
