Bhubaneswar, Jun 6: Under India’s BRICS 2026 Chairship, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) successfully hosted the second meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group (DRRG) in Puri, Odisha, from June 3 to 5.

Addressing a joint press conference at Lok Seva Bhavan, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari along with NDMA Members Krishna Swaroop Vatsa and Dr. Dinesh Kumar Aswal, highlighted the outcomes of the meeting and Odisha’s achievements in disaster preparedness.

Senior officials including Rita Missal, Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, and Dr. Kamal Lochan Mishra also participated.

Strengthening Global Cooperation

The meeting, themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” brought together senior officials and technical experts from eight BRICS member countries—China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and sharing best practices in disaster risk reduction.

Odisha presented its globally acclaimed disaster management practices, including early warning systems, cyclone preparedness, evacuation planning, and community-based disaster management. Delegates praised the State’s success in achieving near-zero casualty outcomes during major cyclones, acknowledging Odisha as a model for resilience.

Demonstrations and Cultural Exchange

Delegates witnessed a live water rescue demonstration by ODRAF at Ramchandi, showcasing operational preparedness and specialised equipment for flood emergencies. Beyond disaster management, the event also highlighted Odisha’s cultural heritage. Participants visited the Konark Sun Temple and enjoyed Odissi, Chhau, Jatra, and tribal performances, reflecting the State’s rich traditions.

Enhanced Global Profile

The successful hosting of the BRICS DRRG meeting has further strengthened Odisha’s international profile as a leader in disaster resilience. The outcomes align with the vision of Viksit Odisha 2036, which aims to maintain zero casualty outcomes, strengthen resilient infrastructure, modernise ODRAF, and reduce disaster impacts on livelihoods.
