Bhubaneswar, Mar 12: Odisha, celebrated for its stunning biodiversity, has recorded a significant rise in its dolphin population during the 2024-25 season.
A recent census revealed a total of 710 dolphins across the state, with the Humpback Dolphin (498) and the Irrawaddy Dolphin (188) as the most dominant species.
The Mangrove Wildlife Division in Rajnagar emerged as the top habitat, hosting 505 dolphins, followed by the Chilika Wildlife Division, which recorded 174 dolphins — primarily Irrawaddy Dolphins.
This growth has been met with enthusiasm from environmentalists and wildlife advocates. The increase in cetacean population highlights the success of conservation efforts and serves as a strong indicator of a healthy marine ecosystem.
Despite the encouraging numbers, experts emphasise the importance of sustained efforts to safeguard dolphin habitats, saying stronger regulations and enhanced conservation initiatives are needed to maintain this positive momentum.
