Odisha Scientists Discover Rare ‘Happy-Face’ Spider in Himalayas After 125 Years
New Himalayan Happy-Face Spider Species Found

Key Points

Two researchers from Odisha have discovered a rare spider species in the Western Himalayas, named Theridion himalayana, whose unique markings resemble a smiling face, adding a new chapter to global biodiversity studies.
Bhubaneswar, May 3: Odisha has once again made its mark in the world of science with the discovery of a rare spider species in the Western Himalayas. Researchers Dr. Devi Priyadarshini and Ashirbad Tripathy identified the new species in the forests near Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. The spider has been named the Himalayan Happy-Face Spider or Theridion himalayana.

This discovery is particularly significant as it comes after 125 years, adding a new dimension to biodiversity research. The spider’s unique appearance has drawn global attention — its body is decorated with red, black, and white spots arranged in such a way that it resembles a smiling human face. Scientists note that the species can display nearly 32 different variations of this “happy-face” pattern.

While similar spiders are found in Hawaii, the Himalayan species is biologically distinct. Its reproductive style and physical structure set it apart from other known species worldwide. The researchers explained that the spider had remained hidden in the snow-clad peaks and dense forests of the Western Himalayas until now.

The discovery followed years of dedicated study and fieldwork. The researchers emphasized that the spider’s unique traits make it an important addition to the global catalogue of biodiversity. The finding has sparked excitement in Odisha’s scientific community, with many hailing it as a proud achievement for the state.

The spider’s distinct biological features not only enrich scientific knowledge but also highlight the ecological richness of the Himalayan region. Experts believe that such discoveries underscore the importance of continued exploration and conservation of fragile ecosystems.
