Odisha Rolls Out ‘Shaktishree’ App to Ensure Student Safety
The Higher Education Department has instructed institutions to guide students on how to use the app effectively.

Key Points

Odisha’s Higher Education Department launches Shaktishree app, offering 24-hour safety features like SOS alerts, live location sharing, and counselling support to protect students and strengthen campus security statewide.

Bhubaneswar, May 20: The Higher Education Department has introduced a new mobile application, ‘Shaktishree’, aimed at ensuring round-the-clock safety for students across Odisha.

Following recent concerns over student security, the department has directed all colleges and universities to ensure that learners download and actively use the app.

Once installed, the app requires registration with essential details such as the student’s name, SAMS ID, institution registration number, gender, registered mobile number, and two emergency contact numbers. This information helps authorities respond quickly in case of emergencies.

The app offers multiple features designed to safeguard students. These include an SOS assistant, safety check-in, access to important institutional updates, announcements, counselling support, and training modules on handling unsafe situations.

Most importantly, students can instantly share their live location with family or authorities if they feel unsafe or face danger.

The Higher Education Department has instructed institutions to guide students on how to use the app effectively. A circular has been issued to all university registrars and college principals, emphasizing the importance of student awareness and compliance.

The initiative comes in the wake of last year’s tragic incident involving a female student at Balasore FM College, which prompted the government to prioritize student safety measures.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi officially launched the ‘Shaktishree’ app on May 2, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting young learners.

By offering 24-hour support, the app ensures that complaints or alerts submitted by students reach both their institutions and the Higher Education Department.

This integrated system is expected to create a safer environment for students and reassure parents about their children’s well-being.
