Odisha Rolls Out ‘Sachetanata Ratha’ for Rooftop Gardening Revolution

Bhubaneswar, Jul 8: In an ambitious bid to promote urban horticulture, nutritional security, and greener cities, the Odisha government flagged off a ' Rooftop Garden Campaign Ratha' in the twin cities.
The initiative aims to transform urban spaces into eco-friendly zones through rooftop gardening and organic cultivation.
The programme was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo. The joint effort is led by the Central Horticultural Experiment Station and the Odisha State Agriculture Department.
Speaking at the launch, the Deputy CM emphasized Odisha’s success in exporting organic fruits abroad and urged urban residents to grow their own organic produce on rooftops. The minister stated that the government will facilitate export efforts for rooftop-grown organic harvests.

This innovative intervention is designed not only to beautify cityscapes but also to help citizens grow pesticide-free food, reduce stress, and enhance self-sufficiency. Urban dwellers are encouraged to adopt rooftop gardening as a lifestyle, with the campaign highlighting its environmental, health, and economic benefits.
Agriculture Secretary noted that rooftop gardeners benefit from toxin-free diets and mental wellness, making this movement a holistic solution for city living. According to the Chief Scientist at the Central Horticultural Station, the campaign is initially focused on Cuttack and Bhubaneswar but will later expand to Sambalpur, Jaipur, and Berhampur.
The “Sachetanata Rath” will travel across these cities, raising awareness and offering technical guidance to citizens interested in rooftop horticulture. Officials expect this proactive campaign to inspire broader community participation and shape Odisha’s cities into greener, healthier spaces.
