Odisha Police, STA Train Officers in Scientific Crash Investigation

Cuttack, Aug 26: Odisha Police, in collaboration with the State Transport Authority (STA) and experts from IIT Madras, organised a one-day Road Safety and Crash Investigation Training Programme at the Office of the Inspector General of Police, Central Range, Cuttack, officials said on Wednesday.

 The initiative aims to strengthen scientific crash investigation and reduce road fatalities through evidence-based interventions.

The training, supervised by Dr. Satyajit Naik, IGP, Central Range, brought together police officers and road safety stakeholders. IIT Madras experts, serving as technical consultants to STA, Odisha, shared specialised knowledge on crash scene examination, evidence collection, crash reconstruction, and analysis of contributing factors.

Emphasis was placed on converting crash data into actionable preventive measures. Officers were trained to identify road engineering deficiencies, vehicle-related issues, and human factors beyond immediate causes. Dr. Naik said, “Every road crash provides valuable information about gaps that need to be addressed. A scientific investigation helps us understand those gaps and enables preventive measures.”

The programme highlighted Odisha’s broader road safety ecosystem, where STA has been promoting data-driven approaches, including a Road Safety Dashboard and improved inter-agency coordination. Reliable crash data, integrated with scientific investigation, is expected to help identify accident-prone locations and design targeted interventions.

Amitabh Thakur, IPS, Transport Commissioner-cum-Chairman, STA, Odisha, addressed the valedictory session, stressing that “Road safety is a shared responsibility. Scientific investigation, reliable data and coordinated action are essential to identify real causes of crashes and develop preventive measures.”

Certificates were distributed to participants, who appreciated the practical orientation and field insights provided by IIT Madras experts. The initiative reflects Odisha’s commitment to building a scientific, technology-enabled, and preventive road safety framework, combining policing expertise, transport administration, and academic knowledge to save lives and make roads safer.
