Jharsuguda, Apr 12: Two men, accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, were injured in police encounter in Jharsuguda district.

According to reports, two accused, Sheikh Ashish (22) and Abhishek Barik (30), were arrested on charges of raping a minor girl in the Belpahad area. Following a medical examination, the accused persons were being shifted to court in a police van when the duo tried to escape the custody after one of them complained of ill health.

Seeing the severity of the situation, the police official stopped the vehicle midway when the accused persons tried to run away after snatching the weapon of an officer.

The accused then opened six rounds of bullet from the stolen police weapon before officers responded with warning shots. When the situation escalated, police opened fire, injuring both the accused.

Subsequently, they were admitted the district headquarters hospital for treatment and are under observation.
