Crime / Odisha Police ASI Sentenced to Four Years Jail for Bribe

Cuttack, Jul 30: In a significant anti-corruption development, Odisha Vigilance has secured the conviction of Amiya Kumar Behera, former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police at Jenapur Police Station in Jajpur district, presently posted at Athagada Police Station in Cuttack district. He was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment and fined by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, in a bribery case.

Behera had been charge-sheeted under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for demanding and accepting a bribe from a complainant to compromise a miscellaneous allegation lodged against him at Jenapur Police Station. The court found him guilty and ordered his immediate custody to serve the sentence.

The case highlights Odisha Vigilance’s continuing efforts to curb corruption within the police force. Officials confirmed that following the conviction, the department will move the competent authority to dismiss Behera from service.
