Wildlife Protection / Odisha Plans DNA Test to Trace Orangutans’ Origin

Bhubaneswar, Sept 30: The orangutans housed at Nandankanan Zoological Park are set to undergo DNA testing, a move that will help determine their country of origin.

Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia confirmed that the state has already contacted the Geological Survey of India to facilitate the process. Samples will soon be collected and dispatched for examination.

The minister stated that once the DNA report is available, it will provide clarity on the lineage of the orangutans, and the findings will be shared with the Government of India. This step is seen as crucial in tracing the background of the rare primates, which were rescued earlier this month.

On the health front, there is encouraging news. The orangutans’ condition has shown marked improvement, according to the minister. Odisha’s climate appears to suit them well, and their treatment is being closely monitored.

A team of doctors from Mysuru is supervising their care, with round‑the‑clock monitoring in place. “They are being looked after like children, with special attention to their diet and medical needs,” Khuntia said.

The orangutans were brought to Nandankanan on September 8 after being rescued from Baleshwar. During blood sample testing on September 17, they were found to be suffering from anemia.

To address this, necessary injections were administered to boost their blood levels. A technical committee formed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) has been overseeing their treatment and providing expert advice.

With DNA testing underway and health conditions improving, the orangutans have become a focal point of attention at Nandankanan.
