Rourkela/Bhubaneswar, Jun 9: On Monday, India solemnly observed the 125th Martyrdom Day of Birsa Munda, the revered tribal revolutionary and freedom fighter.
Born in 1875 in Ulihatu village, Birsa Munda led a fierce resistance against British oppression, uniting tribal communities across Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal in an armed struggle. His fight for indigenous rights and autonomy made him a legendary figure in India’s history. Tragically, he passed away at the young age of 25 in Ranchi Jail in 1900.
In Rourkela, a grand tribute was paid at Birsa Munda Square, where dignitaries including the Deputy Collector, ITDA PA, and Steel Plant CGM laid floral wreaths at his statue. The event was attended by prominent personalities and government officials, marking the occasion with deep reverence.
Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also paid homage at the Birsa Munda statue outside the Legislative Assembly, accompanied by Speaker Surama Padhy, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi, and BJP legislators. The leaders acknowledged Birsa Munda’s sacrifices and his pivotal role in India’s freedom movement.
Birsa Munda’s legacy continues to inspire generations, symbolizing resilience and the fight for justice. His contributions led to significant reforms, including the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, which safeguarded tribal land rights.
