Weather Alert / Odisha on High Alert as Deep Depression Triggers Heavy Rain

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24: A deep depression that crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast and moved inland has triggered heavy rainfall across several districts of Odisha. The State government is fully prepared to tackle possible local impacts, with precautionary and response measures already in place, officials said on Thursday.

Preparedness and Vigilance

Officials said that district administrations and response teams have been placed on high alert in sensitive areas. Continuous monitoring of rainfall intensity, river and reservoir levels, and vulnerable zones is underway. Night patrolling along river embankments and field-level inspections are being carried out.

Traffic management measures have been introduced, with alternative routes identified in case of inundated or unsafe roads and bridges. Fallen trees and debris are being cleared promptly to restore connectivity. Preventive steps are also being taken in landslide-prone areas, while affected families are being shifted to safer locations where necessary. Senior departmental officers have been deployed to coordinate with district administrations.

District-Level Impact

Heavy rain has been reported in Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada. Localised incidents such as uprooted trees, water flowing over roads and bridges, and minor wall collapses have been reported, but officials said immediate action has kept the situation under control. No major casualties or widespread damage have been reported so far.

Weather Warnings

The Meteorological Department has issued a red weather warning for Nabarangpur and orange warnings for Koraput, Malkangiri, Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir and Kalahandi. District administrations are closely monitoring rainfall, river levels, and communication networks in these areas.

Coordinated Response

ODRAF, fire services, and local administration teams are working in coordination to ensure quick response and recovery. The State government has emphasised “zero casualty” as the top priority, maintaining strict vigilance as the depression gradually weakens. Officials said the administration remains fully alert to any possible localised impact.
