Odisha On Alert As 3 Successive Low-Pressure Systems Approach

Key Points

Three low-pressure systems may bring heavy rain and possible cyclone.

IMD issues yellow warning for multiple districts in Odisha.

State government assures readiness for any emergency situation.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 21: The Odisha government has issued a weather alert as three back-to-back low-pressure systems are expected to impact the state over the coming days, officials said on Tuesday.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of potential heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over several districts in Odisha due to the possibility of a cyclonic storm forming over the Bay of Bengal.

Active System Over Bay of Bengal

Currently, one low-pressure system is active over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is expected to move toward the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh coast. According to weather expert Surendra Nath Pasupalak, this system may intensify further but is unlikely to become a severe cyclone.

Two More Systems Developing
The IMD has forecast the formation of a second low-pressure area around October 24–25 near the southern Andaman Sea, which may intensify into a cyclonic storm and cross the Odisha–West Bengal coast between October 24–25. A third system is expected around October 29, raising concerns about prolonged rainfall and storm activity.

Rainfall Forecast and Warnings
IMD has issued a yellow warning for several districts in Odisha, predicting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms over the next five days. Southern, coastal, and northern Odisha are likely to be affected, with rainfall intensity peaking around October 26. Farmers in low-lying areas are particularly concerned about crop damage due to excessive rain.

Government Preparedness
Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari stated that the state government is fully prepared to handle any situation arising from the weather systems. He emphasized that both Indian and international weather models are being monitored closely, and disaster response teams are on standby.
