Jajpur, July 14:  A newlywed woman was found dead by hanging from a ceiling fan in her in-laws’ residence in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Monday, just 40 days after her marriage.


The incident took place at Achyutpur village under Dharmasala police limits in the district. The death has sparked serious allegations from the woman’s family, who have claimed she was murdered for dowry.


As per reports, the victim, identified as Kiran Prabha Barik, had married Srikanta Jena of Shankha village, Patunia Panchayat, in a love marriage.


Kiran’s father, Harihar Barik, filed a formal complaint with the Dharmsala police, alleging that she had been subjected to harassment and was ultimately killed by her husband and his family.

The woman’s mother, Arati Barik, and brother, Santosh Barik, echoed the claims and demanded justice for her untimely demise.


Dharmasala Police launched an investigation, sending a scientific team to the scene and seizing the body for postmortem.


Preliminary findings indicate possible foul play, and the husband, Srikanta, has been detained in this connection, police said adding that further investigation is underway.
