Bhubaneswar, Jun 24: The Odisha government will observe Samvidhan Hatya Divas (Constitution Assassination Day) on June 25, 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India in 1975.
The state-level event will be held at the Bhubaneswar Railway Auditorium, with participation from students, dignitaries, and freedom fighters.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj announced that the programme will involve students from political science departments across colleges and universities. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of constitutional sovereignty and democratic values.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is expected to attend the event and honor those who were imprisoned during the Emergency. The government currently provides pensions to 56 such individuals and has recently added 52 more names to the list of recognized democracy fighters.
The observance will include seminars, workshops, and cultural activities organized by the Higher Education Department. These initiatives are designed to engage the youth in reflecting on the lessons of the Emergency and the need to uphold constitutional principles.
Minister Suraj emphasized that the day is not just a remembrance but a call to correct past mistakes and reaffirm commitment to the Constitution. “Those who oppose this observance are not showing respect to the Constitution,” he stated.
The state government has also encouraged educational institutions to conduct essay competitions, debates, and awareness marches under the theme “Save the Constitution.” The initiative is part of a broader effort to instil civic responsibility and constitutional literacy among students.
