Bhubaneswar, Jul 2: Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan has issued a strong rebuttal to opposition criticism surrounding the conduct of the annual Rath Yatra festival in Puri. Addressing the media, Harichandan accused opposition leaders of politicizing a sacred religious event and attempting to create unnecessary controversy.
“Those who have already proven themselves to be ineffective are now the loudest critics,” said the Minister, referring to past administrations. He emphasized that the people of Odisha are well aware of how previous governments managed the Rath Yatra and the incidents that occurred under their watch.
Harichandan made it clear that the current government does not intend to politicize the festival. “We do not wish to turn Rath Yatra into a political battleground. This is a divine event, and those who try to exploit it for political gain will face consequences from the Lord himself,” he stated.
The Minister assured that all necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival have been made. He expressed confidence that, with Lord Jagannath’s blessings, the entire Rath Yatra process will conclude peacefully and successfully.

He also highlighted that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi personally reviewed the preparations on Tuesday and held discussions with temple servitors to ensure seamless coordination. “There is no reason for concern. Every measure has been taken to ensure the safety and comfort of devotees,” Harichandan added.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following a tragic stampede earlier during the festival, which claimed three lives. While the government has ordered a probe and taken administrative action, opposition parties have continued to demand resignations and accountability.
