Key Points

This annual restriction, enforced under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982, prohibits fishing by mechanised boats and trawlers until June 15

Bhubaneswar, Apr 15: The Odisha government has imposed a two-month fishing ban along the state's coastline starting today, to protect marine biodiversity during the peak breeding season.

This annual restriction, enforced under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982, prohibits fishing by mechanised boats and trawlers until June 15. However, traditional fishing boats under 8.5 meters in length are exempt, provided they operate within territorial waters and target pelagic species.

The ban aims to safeguard marine life, including the Olive Ridley turtles during their critical nesting season.

The restriction impacts approximately 21,000 fishing vessels, including 2,000 registered trawlers, and affects the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen and workers in the fishing industry.

While the government has announced relief measures for affected families, many fishermen have expressed concerns over inadequate support.
