Odisha Home To 696 Leopards: Report

The state’s first Leopard census report was released Thursday revealed that there are 696 leopards in Odisha.
 

Bhubaneswar, Oct 3: The Odisha’s first Leopard census report hasrevealed that there are 696 leopards in the state.

The report was released on Thursday.

According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) report, there were 568 tigers in the year 2022 , while in 2018, a total of 760 leopards were identified in the state. so, the state Forest Department decided to undertake its own leopard census.

Camera traps were used during the recent leopard census.

As many as 284 cameras were strategically placed at various forest areas and the census was undertaken by analysing photographs, footprintss, and other tracking methods.

According to the camera trap, there are about 200 leopards in the forest areas of Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts. Similarly, there are more than 150 leopards in satkosia sanctuary. There are more than 50 leopards in the Debrigarh sanctuary.
