Bhubaneswar, May 1: In a significant move to support the workforce, Odisha Chief Minister announced on Workers’ Day that daily wages for workers across the state have been increased, effective retrospectively from April 1, 2026. The revision covers unskilled, semi‑skilled, skilled, and highly skilled categories, ensuring fair compensation in line with rising living costs.
According to the announcement, unskilled workers will now earn Rs 472 per day, while semi‑skilled workers will receive Rs 522. Skilled workers’ wages have been raised to Rs 572 per day, and highly skilled workers will earn Rs 622 daily. The hike reflects a uniform increase of Rs 10 per day as part of the dearness allowance adjustment.
Officials clarified that the adjustable dearness allowance will be reapplied at six‑month intervals, ensuring wages remain aligned with inflation and cost‑of‑living changes. The retrospective implementation from April 1 means workers will benefit immediately from the revised rates, with arrears accounted for in upcoming payments.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the wage hike is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving labour welfare and ensuring economic justice for workers across Odisha. “This step honours the contribution of workers to the state’s growth and development, while also safeguarding their livelihoods against rising costs,” the announcement noted.
Labour unions and worker associations welcomed the decision, describing it as a timely intervention that will provide relief to thousands of families dependent on daily wages. The move is expected to strengthen purchasing power among workers and contribute to local economic activity.
