✨Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri and Udaygiri, collectively known as the “Diamond Triangle” of Odisha’s Buddhist heritage, are located in Jajpur district. These sites date back to between the 5th and 13th centuries CE and are renowned for their monasteries, stupas, sculptures and inscriptions that reflect the flourishing of Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions.
Archaeological excavations have revealed relics, including a casket believed to contain the Buddha’s remains at Lalitgiri, underscoring their global importance.
Officials said the inclusion in UNESCO’s Tentative List is the first step towards full World Heritage Site status, which requires detailed documentation, conservation measures and international evaluation. If granted, the recognition would place Odisha’s Buddhist sites alongside globally renowned heritage landmarks, enhancing their visibility and protection.
The State government has reiterated its commitment to preserving these monuments and promoting them as part of Odisha’s cultural tourism circuit. The move is expected to attract scholars, pilgrims and visitors from across the world, strengthening Odisha’s position on the global heritage map.
