Bhubaneswar, May 21: The Odisha government has placed Puri’s development at the forefront, with plans to expand the city’s boundaries and improve urban infrastructure.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Patra conducted a ground review of various projects ahead of the annual Rath Yatra.

Key Initiatives for Puri’s Development

Minister Patra emphasised that Puri’s perimeter will be expanded, and its urban layout will undergo significant changes. Among the major improvements:

Drainage System Overhaul: All open drains will be covered with slabs to prevent waterlogging and improve sanitation.
Clean Drinking Water Initiative: The Drink from Tap program will be reinforced with large signboards to promote awareness.
Flood Prevention Measures: Special focus on Bada Danda (Grand Road) to ensure rainwater does not accumulate during monsoon.
Iron Slab Replacement: Old and damaged iron slabs in drains will be replaced for better durability.
STP Connectivity: Drains not yet connected to Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) will be linked immediately.

Minister’s Inspection and Future Plans

During his inspection, Minister Patra personally tested the Drink from Tap water quality and assured that while water availability is sufficient, environmental cleanliness will be prioritised. He also directed officials to increase the visibility of the Drink from Tap initiative by installing larger signboards.

Additionally, narrow lanes and clogged drains in various localities will be cleaned immediately. The minister reiterated that development efforts will continue beyond Rath Yatra, ensuring long-term urban expansion for Puri.
