Bhubaneswar, June 12: The Odisha government has announced free bus travel for all students appearing in the NEET (UG) Re-exam 2026, scheduled for June 21. The urgent order, issued by the Commerce & Transport Department, allows candidates to avail bus services across the state by producing a valid admit card, officials said on Friday.

The move, approved by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, is aimed at reducing the risk of heatstroke, supporting economically weaker students, and ensuring equitable access to examination centres.

Large Candidate Turnout Expected
According to official figures, 56,983 candidates will appear for the re-exam across 134 centres in Odisha. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting the test after cancelling the earlier May 3 examination due to allegations of irregularities, now under investigation by the CBI.

Implementation Measures
The order directs the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) and the State Transport Authority (STA) to coordinate with district administrations, CRUT (Capital Region Urban Transport), and the Higher Education Department to ensure smooth implementation.

“In order to reduce risk of heatstroke, support to economically weaker students and ensuring equitable access to examination centres, Hon’ble Chief Minister has been pleased to provide free bus travel for the aspirants,” the order stated.

Wider Adoption Across States
Similar measures have been announced in Uttarakhand and Delhi, where state governments will provide free travel in Transport Corporation buses for permanent residents appearing in the re-exam.

Significance for Students
The decision is expected to ease logistical challenges for thousands of aspirants, particularly those from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. With temperatures soaring in Odisha, the initiative also addresses health concerns, ensuring candidates can reach centres safely and focus on their examination.
