Odisha Govt Mandates Life Jackets For Chilika Boat Rides
Safety Measures on Chilika Lake

Key Points

Odisha government has enforced strict safety rules for boat rides in Chilika Lake, making life jackets and safety mandatory for all passengers. Violations will lead to cancellation of boat registrations and legal action.
Bhubaneswar, May 5: In a decisive move to ensure passenger safety, the Odisha government has enforced strict regulations for boat rides in Chilika Lake. The Khordha district administration has announced that all passengers must compulsorily wear life jackets, and every boat must be equipped with safety buoys. The directive comes under the Odisha Boat and Passenger Vessel Rules, 2004, which will now be strictly implemented across the region.

The decision follows growing concerns over passenger safety during the summer season, when sudden storms, including Kalbaisakhi and cyclones, often strike. With the monsoon approaching, authorities fear that adverse weather conditions could increase the risk of accidents in Chilika Lake, one of India’s largest brackish water lagoons and a popular tourist destination.

According to the order, boat owners must provide life jackets to every passenger before departure. Safety buoys must also be kept onboard, and the number of passengers must never exceed the boat’s approved capacity. Any violation of these rules will invite strict action, including cancellation of boat registrations and prosecution under the Odisha Boat Rules, 2004.

The district administration has communicated the new safety measures to local boat associations, including Kalijai Motor Boat Association (Balugaon), Maa Kalijai Motor Boat Owners Association (Badakula), and Maa Kalijai Workers’ Organization (Badakula). Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted by the District Information and Public Relations Department, Khordha, to ensure compliance.

The move comes in the wake of recent tragedies that have highlighted the dangers of unsafe boating practices. Just days ago, a cruise accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, shocked the nation. Nine bodies were recovered, 28 passengers were rescued, but six remain missing. The incident has underscored the urgent need for strict safety enforcement in water-based tourism across India.

Officials emphasized that the new rules are not only preventive but also aimed at instilling a culture of safety among boat operators and passengers. With Chilika Lake attracting thousands of tourists annually, the government hopes these measures will reduce risks and ensure safe travel experiences.

By tightening safety norms, Odisha is setting an example for other states to follow, ensuring that tourism thrives without compromising passenger lives.
