Odisha Govt Launches SAFE Campaign to Empower Women and Promote Gender Equality

Key Points

SAFE campaign includes bi-annual self-defence camps and rights workshops

Focus on gender equality, legal awareness, and safety training

Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: In a progressive move to promote gender equality and strengthen women’s safety, Odisha Higher Education Minister Suraj Suryavansi on Wednesday announced the launch of the SAFE (Shaktishree Actions for Female Empowerment) campaign in the State. The initiative is designed to raise awareness on women’s rights and empower young women through education, training, and community engagement.

The campaign will feature bi-annual self-defence camps across colleges and universities, equipping female students with practical skills to protect themselves in vulnerable situations. In addition, awareness workshops will be conducted to educate participants on legal rights, safety protocols, and gender sensitivity.

Minister Suryavansi emphasized that SAFE is not just a symbolic gesture but a structured, action-oriented program aimed at creating safer spaces for women in educational institutions and beyond. “Empowerment begins with awareness and confidence. SAFE will help our daughters walk fearlessly and dream freely,” he said during the announcement.

The campaign will be implemented in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education, local law enforcement, and women’s rights organizations. Colleges will serve as hubs for training and outreach, with student volunteers playing a key role in mobilizing participation.

SAFE also aims to foster a culture of inclusivity and respect by engaging male students in gender sensitization sessions. The government plans to monitor the campaign’s impact through feedback surveys and periodic reviews, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness.

This initiative comes at a time when national conversations around women’s safety and empowerment are gaining momentum. Odisha’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to building a more equitable and secure environment for all.
