Odisha Bandh: Road Blockades, 'Rail Roko' Proposed; District Administrations Asked to Monitor Law and Order

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7: The state government has issued an alert ahead of the proposed statewide ‘Odisha Bandh’ by various political parties tomorrow, on October 8.

The Home Department has issued a letter to the DGP/IGs and all Collectors-cum-District Magistrates, directing them to take necessary security and preventive measures.

Several political parties, including the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Forward Bloc, NCP and Samajwadi Party, have proposed observing the Odisha Bandh from 6 am to 6 pm on October 8.

Road Blockades, 'Rail Roko' Among Proposed Activities
According to the letter, activities including road blockades, rallies, demonstrations, picketing, 'rail roko' (obstructing trains) and mining shutdowns may take place during the bandh. Government offices, educational institutions, markets and commercial establishments may also be affected.

District Administrations Asked To Take Preventive Measures

The district administrations have been directed to closely monitor the law and order situation and take all necessary preventive and security measures to prevent any untoward incident.

The letter also calls for necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth functioning of state and central government offices during the bandh. It emphasises keeping emergency and essential services operational.

Private Bus Owners Say No To Bandh
Ahead of the proposed bandh, Lokanath Pani, President of the Private Bus Owners’ Association, clarified that bus transport falls under essential services. Keeping the convenience of long-distance passengers in mind, private buses will not participate in tomorrow’s shutdown. Buses will operate as per schedule across all routes statewide.

Meanwhile, auto-rickshaw services across Odisha are set to remain off the roads during the bandh. According to the Secretary of the Auto Drivers’ Association, neither offline nor app-based auto services would be available from 6 am to 6 pm tomorrow.
