Bhubaneswar, May 30: With the monsoon season approaching, the Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, has issued a strict deadline of June 20 for completing drainage work in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

The directive follows a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, emphasizing the need for swift action to prevent urban flooding.

The H&UD Minister has instructed officials to clean all drains and nalas, ensuring proper water flow before heavy rains begin. Areas lacking drain covers will be addressed immediately. To monitor progress, the minister has announced a field visit on June 1 to assess the work firsthand.

Additionally, a permanent solution for waterlogging near ISKCON Temple is in the works, with central government collaboration. Mahapatra said that the main road comes under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is why the in drainage work is getting delayed. But it will be addressed soon, he added. He, however, assured that service drains near ISKCON will be completed first, with tenders expected to be finalized within days.

The government is also tackling waterlogging issues near SUM Hospital, aiming for resolution very soon. Meanwhile, discussions with the Revenue Minister have been held to address land-related concerns, including part plot disputes.

Another key project under review is the 200-foot-wide Salia Sahi road, which will be expedited under the supervision of BMC and BDA. Residents affected by the construction will be provided alternative housing, ensuring a smooth transition.
