Bhubaneswar, Aug 9: In a bid to make this year’s Local Self-Governance Day memorable and impactful, the Odisha Housing and Urban Development Department has announced a vibrant weeklong celebration across all urban local bodies (ULBs) from August 25 to August 30.
The main event will culminate on August 31, marking the official observance of Local Self-Governance Day.
The department has issued guidelines to ensure active citizen participation, environmental awareness, cleanliness drives, and community bonding. The initiative aims to foster civic pride and sustainable urban living through a series of engaging activities.
Key highlights of the celebration include the citywide tree plantation campaign titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, identification of suitable land for sapling planting, and involvement of students, self-help groups, and civil society. Awareness rallies and eco-friendly practices will be promoted throughout the week.

The launch of the “Green Ward” campaign will encourage branding and media coverage to boost community participation. Efforts will also be made to strengthen citizen engagement and service delivery, while honouring sanitation workers through the “Garima IEC” initiative focused on dignity and welfare.
Special collaboration camps like “Har Ghar Tiranga – Har Ghar Swachhata” will link patriotism with cleanliness drives. Morning street festivals will feature group entertainment and promote healthy lifestyles.
