Odisha Food Supplies Minister Assures Swift Resolution to Rice Procurement Issues

Key Points

Over 3.38 lakh farmers registered with simplified self-declaration forms.

Odisha expects higher paddy production this year due to expanded cultivation.

Minister assures quick resolution to central rice procurement delays.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 31: The Odisha government has simplified the farmer registration process ahead of the upcoming Kharif season, aiming to ensure smooth procurement of paddy and rice.

Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra has responded to concerns regarding registration delays and rice procurement, assuring that both issues are being actively addressed.

As of now, 3,38,735 farmers have successfully registered, compared to 3,48,000 during the same period last year — a marginal difference attributed to a four-day delay in the registration launch this season.

The process has been made more accessible, requiring farmers to simply sign a self-declaration form. If the land record is in the name of a father or brother, farmers only need to mention it in writing. Forms have already been issued, and registration is progressing smoothly across the state.

The Minister emphasized that there are no major issues in the registration process. A helpline number has been provided for farmers facing any difficulties.

On the issue of rice procurement from the central pool, Minister Patra revealed that discussions have taken place with the Union Minister, who has assured a prompt resolution. Although no new orders have been received yet, a delegation led by the Deputy Chief Minister has also met with the Centre to expedite the process.

Last year, Odisha procured 73.46 lakh metric tons of paddy. This year, the government expects even higher production due to increased cultivation in previously uncultivated areas.

The final procurement volume will be determined after registration is complete. The e-KYC process has helped identify ineligible farmers, which may slightly reduce the number of registered farmers.

The Minister affirmed that the government is fully prepared to procure all the paddy produced.
