Odisha Floods: Water Level Recedes, But People’s Pain Persists

Key Points

Yellow weather warning issued for 15 districts amid flood recovery.

Schools closed in four Dhamnagar panchayats due to waterlogging.

Bhubaneswar, July 28: Even as water levels in major rivers begin to recede, the flood situation in Odisha remains critical, with thousands still stranded in submerged villages and relief operations ongoing.

According to sources, the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur continue to be the worst affected, with Bhograi, Baliapal, and Basta blocks reporting persistent waterlogging and damage to homes, roads, and farmland.

The Baitarani River, flowing dangerously close to its warning level, has triggered panic in Bhadrak and Jajpur. In response, authorities have declared school holidays in four panchayats of Dhamnagar block for July 28 and 29, prioritizing student safety.

Adding to the crisis, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for 15 districts, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next two days.

The warning covers northern and coastal regions, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Mayurbhanj. Officials fear that fresh downpours could worsen the flood situation, especially in low-lying areas already inundated.

Rescue teams from ODRAF, NDRF, and Fire Services remain deployed across the affected zones, with over 100 boats mobilized for evacuation and aid delivery. Relief camps have been set up, offering dry food, clean drinking water, and medical assistance.

The Water Resources Department continues to monitor embankments and river gauges round-the-clock. While the Subarnarekha River shows signs of stabilizing, the threat of renewed flooding due to upstream rainfall and dam discharge remains.

The state government has urged residents to remain alert and follow official advisories.
