Flood Fury / Odisha Floods: Schools To Remain Closed In Four Districts Tomorrow

Bhubaneswar, Jul 29: With incessant rainfall and floodwaters continuing to disrupt life across Odisha, district administrations in Nabarangpur, Jajpur, Kalahandi and Bhadrak have ordered the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres on Thursday (July 30), prioritising student safety amid worsening conditions.

Officials on Wednesday said the decision was taken after heavy rains triggered by a low-pressure system left several areas inundated. Rising river levels and waterlogging have made commuting unsafe, prompting district collectors to issue directives suspending classes in government, aided and private institutions.

In Nabarangpur, the Collector announced a holiday for all schools and Anganwadi centres, citing forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Teachers and staff, however, have been asked to remain present at their institutions.

Jajpur district, reeling under floodwaters from the Baitarani and Brahmani rivers, will see all government, private and higher secondary schools closed on Thursday. The district education officer issued orders under the collector’s instructions, stressing student safety.

Similarly, Kalahandi district administration has suspended classes in all primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, including OAV, KVS, EMRS and JNV institutions, along with Anganwadi centres. While students will stay home, staff have been directed to report as usual.

Bhadrak, already facing severe flood conditions, extended school closures for a third consecutive day. With water levels yet to recede, the collector ordered all government, aided and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres, to remain shut on Thursday.

Officials emphasised that the closures are precautionary, aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring children are not exposed to unsafe travel conditions. Relief and rescue operations continue across affected districts, with the administration monitoring rainfall and flood levels closely.
