Key Points

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi visited flood-hit Jajpur and Bhadrak, meeting victims and inspecting relief centres as rising Baitarani and Brahmani waters maroon villages, damage crops, and trigger widespread school closures.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday visited ground zero in Jajpur and Bhadrak districts to assess the flood situation and interact with affected residents.

Accompanied by Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Cooperation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and Korei MLA, the Chief Minister began his tour at Kosalpur in Dasarathpur block of Jajpur before moving to Tarapada Panchayat.

Floodwaters have entered villages with strong currents, damaging farmland and destroying paddy and vegetable crops. The administration has declared all government, private, and higher secondary schools closed in Jajpur district until further notice.

Bhadrak and Chandbali under Threat

Chandbali block is facing a second wave of floods, with over 30 villages across 10 panchayats inundated. Many areas are cut off from the outside world, with Kherang and Raranagar panchayats reporting severe conditions. Houses, roads, and farmland remain submerged.

In Anandpur, breaches in the ring road embankment have allowed Baitarani floodwaters to enter Ward No. 7 of the municipality. With upstream rainfall pushing river levels above danger marks, residents have been evacuated to Anandpur Girls’ High School.

Villagers in Fakirpur and surrounding areas spent the night reinforcing embankments with sandbags to prevent further breaches.

Authorities remain on high alert, with the Sub-Collector confirming that all precautionary measures are in place to tackle the worsening flood situation.
