Bhubaneswar, Oct 10: The Odisha Fire Services rescued 2,729 people in water-related emergencies between 2023 and September 2026, according to data released by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services.

During this period, the fire services received 6,478 emergency calls related to drowning incidents and launched rescue operations. The data also recorded 3,684 deaths during the period.

In 2023, the department received 1,410 calls, rescued 660 people and recorded 714 deaths. In 2024, it received 1,296 calls, rescued 859 people and recorded 778 deaths.

In 2025, the fire services received 2,356 calls, rescued 805 people and recorded 1,346 deaths. From January to September 2026, the department received 1,416 calls, rescued 405 people and recorded 846 deaths.

Training To Strengthen Water Rescue Operations
With water-related accidents posing challenges across the state, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services personnel are strengthening their skills with direct support from the state Tourism Department. The initiative also aims to improve training at the Odisha Institute of Water Safety and Lifesaving.

More than 5,000 personnel, including members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire services personnel from other states, have received advanced training in water rescue techniques and adventure tourism at the institute.

Fire Personnel Undergo Advanced Training In Goa
As part of the initiative, a specialised team of 15 selected Odisha Fire Services personnel has participated in a Training of Trainers programme at the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) in Goa.

The advanced course covers surf lifesaving, powerboat and jet ski operations, scuba diving and standard operating procedures for water safety audits.

After completing the course, the personnel are expected to serve as master instructors and help strengthen water rescue capabilities and safety measures for water-based adventure sports across Odisha’s coastline, rivers and inland water bodies.
