Odisha braces for thunderstorms and rain till October 9, with ECMWF predicting a new Bay of Bengal low pressure that may intensify, bringing heavy coastal rainfall between October 14‑18.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7: Odisha is bracing for spells of rain and thunderstorms as a western disturbance is set to influence weather conditions across the state from today until October 9.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to remain cautious during lightning activity, particularly on October 8, when coastal and adjoining districts may witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.

According to forecasts, the impact of the disturbance could bring showers to scattered parts of the state, with localized heavy rainfall possible in some areas. The IMD has urged people to avoid open spaces during lightning strikes and to take necessary precautions.

Adding to the concern, the European weather model ECMWF has predicted the formation of a fresh low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify gradually, potentially developing into a depression and later a deep depression.

Meteorologists have not ruled out the possibility of further strengthening beyond deep depression levels.

The projected track suggests the system may move towards the Andhra‑Odisha coast. As per ECMWF estimates, a low‑pressure area could form over the east‑central Bay of Bengal by October 13, intensify into a depression over the west‑central Bay by October 14, and deepen further by October 15.

By October 16, the system may approach the Andhra or Odisha coast.

Experts note that, similar to the deep depression that struck in late September, the system may not penetrate far inland after landfall, with its impact concentrated along coastal regions.

If the model’s trajectory holds true, Odisha could experience widespread rainfall from October 14 to 18, potentially affecting festive celebrations.
