Bhubaneswar, Sept 6: In a sweeping crackdown on illicit liquor and narcotics, the Odisha Excise Department conducted coordinated raids across the state on 5th September, resulting in the seizure of contraband worth Rs1.25 crore. The enforcement drive led to the registration of 250 cases and the arrest of 115 individuals, while 79 others were released under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).
The operation placed a sharp focus on narcotics enforcement, with eight NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases registered. Among the major recoveries were 156 kilograms of ganja, 200 grams of brown sugar, 25 kilograms of bhanga, and 400 kilograms of mohua flower—materials commonly linked to illegal drug production and distribution.
In addition to narcotics, the raids uncovered massive quantities of illicit liquor and brewing materials. Officials seized 12,954 bulk litres (BL) of India-made foreign liquor (ID liquor), 1,07,460 BL of fermented wash, and 13,285 kilograms of gur wash, indicating widespread illegal distillation activities.
