Bhubaneswar, May 30: In a major anti-corruption operation, the Odisha Vigilance Department has seized ₹2.1 crore in cash from the properties of Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Rural Works Department in Bhubaneswar.

The raids were conducted across seven locations, including his residence, office, and multiple properties in Bhubaneswar, Angul, Pipili, and Puri.

The operation was launched following allegations that Sarangi had amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. During the raid, officials discovered ₹1 crore in cash at his flat in Bhubaneswar and ₹1.1 crore at his residence in Angul.

In a dramatic turn of events, Sarangi reportedly attempted to dispose of bundles of ₹500 notes by throwing them out of his window as vigilance officers arrived.

The raids were carried out by a large team of officers, including eight DSPs, 12 Inspectors, six ASIs, and over 20 staff members. The search warrants were issued by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul, allowing officials to investigate Sarangi’s properties thoroughly.

Apart from cash, officials are scrutinising multiple flats, farmhouses, and land holdings allegedly acquired through corrupt means. The investigation is ongoing, and further revelations are expected as authorities assess Sarangi’s total assets.

This case has sparked discussions on government accountability and corruption in Odisha, with many calling for stricter enforcement and transparency in public offices.
