Odisha Dy Speaker Bats For 'UP Gangster Act' Like Legislation

Key Points
The proposed law aims to empower law enforcement agencies with stronger legal tools to dismantle criminal syndicates involved in land grabbing, extortion, illegal mining, drug trafficking, and contract killings.
Bhubaneswar, Jul 28: To tackle the growing menace of organised crime, Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Bhabani Shankar Bhoi, has urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to initiate the drafting of a new legislation titled the Odisha Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.
Inspired by the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act of 1986, the proposed law aims to empower law enforcement agencies with stronger legal tools to dismantle criminal syndicates involved in land grabbing, extortion, illegal mining, drug trafficking, and contract killings.
In his letter dated July 24, Bhoi emphasised that existing laws such as the BNS, BNSS, and UAPA are inadequate to address the evolving and financially entrenched nature of organised crime in Odisha.
Bhoi described the proposed legislation as a “game-changer” that could restore public confidence in the justice system and serve as a deterrent to criminal elements.
He also recommended forming a committee comprising officials from the Home, Police, Law, and Revenue departments to begin the drafting process.
