Bhubaneswar, Jul 8: Public transportation services across Odisha witnessed major disruptions today as the drivers’ union commenced on an indefinite strike, demanding better working conditions and job security.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded in cities and rural areas alike, with buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis largely off the roads.

The strike, organised by various associations under the drivers’ federation, comes after prolonged negotiations with the state government allegedly failed to yield satisfactory results.

Key demands include social security benefits, accident insurance coverage, and recognition of their role as essential service providers.

Passengers were seen waiting for hours at bus stops and railway stations, many expressing frustration over the lack of alternative arrangements. Emergency services and private vehicles remained operational, though traffic congestion increased in several locations.

Government authorities have appealed to the unions for dialogue, urging them to reconsider the strike in the interest of public convenience. However, union leaders stated that the strike would continue until their demands are formally acknowledged and accepted.
