Bhubaneswar, Jul 11: The statewide drivers’ protest in Odisha has entered its fourth consecutive day. Since Tuesday, drivers of private buses, trucks, taxis, and other commercial vehicles have launched a widespread strike, demanding the creation of a dedicated welfare fund, pension benefits post the age of 60, safeguards against public hostility, and the establishment of designated parking areas and restrooms with essential amenities every 100 kilometers.
The ongoing protest has led to a major disruption in transportation services, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded at bus stands across the state.
While the availability of key essentials such as vegetables remained largely stable, several trade unions have voiced concerns that the ongoing strike may trigger shortages within the next 24 hours.
Residents across the state are facing mounting difficulties, with long queues forming at petrol pumps and reports of fuel shortages emerging from districts like Bolangir, especially in areas such as Puintala.
The Odisha Drivers’ Mahasangha remains firm in its demands, refusing to call off the strike without concrete assurances from the state government. Despite multiple rounds of discussions, no resolution has been reached, leaving essential services—including petrol and diesel tankers—stranded.
While the Food and Supplies Minister has assured that there is no fuel crisis in the state, ground reports suggest otherwise. Several petrol pumps have already exhausted their reserves, and panic buying has intensified amid fears of a prolonged shortage.
