Odisha Transport Authority launches statewide crackdown on passenger travel in goods vehicles after Titilagarh accident, warning violators of strict action including cancellation of registration during a special drive until May 8.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 29: The Odisha Transport Authority has announced strict enforcement against the illegal practice of carrying passengers in goods vehicles, following a tragic accident in Titilagarh, Balangir district.

In the incident, a truck carrying passengers overturned, leading to the death of three people and leaving two others critically injured. The accident prompted immediate action, with officials vowing to prevent such violations in the future.

According to Additional Commissioner of Transport, Dipti Ranjan Patra, a special drive will be conducted across the state until May 8. “Any goods vehicle found transporting passengers will face immediate cancellation of registration,” he warned.

The Transport Authority has urged vehicle owners to exercise caution and avoid such practices. “Owners must ensure their vehicles are not misused. Those found guilty will face strict consequences,” Patra added.

The crackdown will involve surprise checks, with enforcement squads targeting areas where violations are frequent. The move is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce fatalities caused by reckless transport practices.

Past campaigns have attempted to curb passenger transport in goods vehicles, but this time, authorities are adopting a zero-tolerance approach by linking violations directly to vehicle registration status.

The Transport Authority believes this will act as a deterrent and ensure compliance.

With enforcement teams already deployed, the government hopes to send a strong message that passenger safety cannot be compromised.
