Key Points
The department, under the leadership of Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, has adopted an "action mode" to tackle illegal immigration, emphasising swift measures against those identified.
Bhubaneswar, May 20: The Housing and Urban Development Department of Odisha has initiated a robust survey to identify Bangladeshi nationals residing in the state, with a particular focus on slum areas.
The department, under the leadership of Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, has adopted an "action mode" to tackle illegal immigration, emphasising swift measures against those identified. The move aims to address rising concerns over disorder and criminal activities, which the minister attributed largely to unauthorized Bangladeshi settlers.
The survey, already underway, targets slum regions but extends to other areas to ensure comprehensive coverage. Minister Mahapatra assured that individuals identified as Bangladeshi nationals will face immediate action, including arrangements for their repatriation to Bangladesh.
"Foreign nationals cannot reside in our region," the minister declared, underscoring the government’s firm stance on curbing illegal immigration.
The Special Task Force (STF) is actively involved in the identification process, ensuring that action is taken promptly at locations where unauthorised individuals are found. The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order and addressing security concerns linked to illegal settlers.
According to the minister, the presence of Bangladeshi nationals has been a significant factor in local disturbances and criminal activities, necessitating urgent action.
This operation aligns with broader efforts to strengthen regional security and ensure compliance with immigration laws. The department has vowed to continue the survey rigorously, leaving no stone unturned in identifying and repatriating illegal immigrants.
As Odisha intensifies its efforts, the focus remains on creating a secure environment for residents while addressing the challenges posed by unauthorised immigration. The Housing and Urban Development Department’s decisive steps signal a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal residency, with repatriation as the cornerstone of its strategy.
