Odisha CM Mohan Majhi Criticises Previous BJD Regime, Calls Its 'Women Empowerment' Claims ‘Hollow’

Key Points

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched a sharp attack on the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government on Saturday, accusing it of failing to deliver on its promises regarding women empowerment.

Berhampur, March 8: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched a sharp attack on the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government on Saturday, accusing it of failing to deliver on its promises regarding women empowerment.

Speaking at an event in Berhampur, Ganjam district, where he oversaw the disbursement of the second installment of the Subhadra Yojana, Majhi alleged that the former administration had only indulged in rhetoric while neglecting real progress in uplifting women.

"The Naveen Patnaik government frequently spoke about women empowerment, but their promises remained unfulfilled. Their actions never translated into meaningful change, and the women of Odisha responded by voting for change in the 2024 elections," the Chief Minister remarked.   Majhi reiterated his government's focus on women's welfare, stressing a result-oriented approach to their advancement.

"We have a clear vision to enhance the status of women in Odisha. Within just 24 minutes of taking charge on June 12, 2024, we announced the Subhadra Yojana, providing financial aid of Rs 50,000 in ten equal installments over five years. Within three months, we implemented the scheme, and today, over one crore women, including adolescent girls, have received Rs 10,000 each," he noted.

Countering the opposition’s criticism, Majhi dismissed BJD’s remarks on his administration’s efforts.    "The opposition is in shock seeing how our government achieved in just 24 minutes what they couldn't in 24 years," he said.

The Chief Minister also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching the Subhadra Yojana on September 17 last year and highlighted its growing impact. "I have exciting news—five lakh beneficiaries of the scheme have already reached 'Lakhpati Didi' status, making Odisha the second-highest in the country in this regard. Our government will continue to extend full support to ensure more women achieve financial independence," he declared.

In a major announcement, the Chief Minister unveiled plans for the implementation of the ‘Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana,’ introduced in the 2024-25 state budget. Under this initiative, the government will organize mass weddings, covering all associated costs, including wedding processions and community feasts.

"Each event will see 50 couples getting married with full state support. From bands to baarats, everything will be arranged to ensure that underprivileged families can celebrate their children’s weddings with dignity," Majhi announced, drawing loud cheers from the audience.

Issuing a firm warning against crimes against women, the Chief Minister vowed strict legal measures. "I appeal to everyone in Odisha to respect women. Those involved in crimes against women will face stringent punishment, including imprisonment," he asserted.

The event saw a massive turnout, with thousands of women beneficiaries attending and applauding the government's initiatives aimed at empowering them financially and socially.
