Fuel Conservation / Odisha CM Issues 8-Point Directive to Cut Fuel Use
·1 hour ago·2 min read

Key Points
- Mandatory EV adoption for new government vehicles from June 1, 2026.
- Virtual meetings to replace non-essential physical gatherings.
- Carpooling among officials to reduce vehicle usage and costs.
- 10% monthly fuel cut mandated across all departments.
Bhubaneswar, May 21: In response to rising global fuel concerns triggered by the West Asia crisis, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday took decisive steps to reduce petrol and diesel consumption across government departments.
After halving the number of vehicles in his own convoy, the Chief Minister has now directed the Chief Secretary to enforce an eight-point guideline aimed at curbing fuel usage in official operations.
The measures, effective from June 1, 2026, emphasize a shift toward electric vehicles (EVs), virtual meetings, and shared transport systems. Government offices will be required to adopt EVs for new purchases and rentals, while senior officials must practice carpooling to minimize individual vehicle use.
Additionally, officials traveling long distances will be encouraged to use buses or trains instead of cars. The Finance Department has been tasked with issuing clear guidelines on who can use government vehicles personally and how officers with private EVs can integrate them into official duties.

To further reduce dependency on fossil fuels, electric buses and minibuses will be introduced for employees commuting from residential clusters. Each department must ensure at least a 10% reduction in monthly petrol and diesel consumption.
The Chief Minister has stressed strict compliance across all levels of governance — from the state secretariat to block offices, universities, and public sector undertakings. This initiative reflects Odisha’s commitment to sustainable governance and sets a precedent for other states to follow.
