Odisha: Class 2 Girl Locked Overnight In Keonjhar School, Rescued After 17 Hours

Keonjhar, Aug 22: In a shocking incident, a Class 2 student of the Government Upper Primary School at Anjar in Odisha’s Keonjhar district was accidentally locked inside her classroom and left behind after school hours. The school officials allegedly locked the premises around 4 PM on Thursday, unaware that the young girl was still inside, family members said on Friday.

As per reports, Yochana Dehuri, daughter of Tuna Dehuri in Anjar village, remained trapped in the classroom overnight. Her family searched frantically when she didn’t return home but failed to locate her. It wasn’t until the next morning, around 9 AM, when the school cook, Sita Patra, arrived to open the school, that the girl was discovered hanging from the classroom window railing in a desperate attempt to escape.

✨According to eyewitnesses, Yochana had tried to bend the iron bars of the window using all her strength. Her legs had managed to slip through, but her torso and head remained stuck, leaving her suspended and in distress throughout the night. Villagers and family members, upon seeing her condition, rushed to bring the classroom key from the cook and bent the window bars to rescue her.
The minor girl was immediately taken to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital for treatment by her father Amar Dehuri and headmaster Gairahari Mahant. Her condition is reportedly stable.
This incident has raised serious concerns about school safety protocols and staff accountability in the state.
